Tottenham Slams Manchester City 2-0 at Etihad in Premier League Upset

Manchester City suffered a disappointing 2–0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, as early-season optimism gave way to familiar defensive woes. The result sees Spurs climb to the top of the Premier League table, while City’s title ambitions face renewed scrutiny.

Goals from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha, both scored just before halftime, sealed the win for Tottenham and marked a perfect start for new manager Thomas Frank, who has now guided his side to two consecutive victories without conceding.

City, who finished third last season behind Liverpool and Arsenal, had opened the new campaign with a convincing 4–0 win over Wolves. However, Saturday’s performance highlighted unresolved issues in defense and goalkeeping, with James Trafford struggling in goal despite the return to fitness of Ederson.

The Brazilian is reportedly close to a move to Galatasaray, potentially paving the way for a bid for PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Tottenham’s opener came in the 35th minute when Mohammed Kudus set up Richarlison, who squared the ball for Johnson to finish past Trafford.

Although initially flagged offside, a VAR review confirmed the goal, with Ruben Dias playing Richarlison onside.

Moments later, Trafford’s misjudged pass inside his own box was intercepted by Pape Mate Sarr. Although the goalkeeper recovered to block Richarlison’s shot, Palhinha was on hand to convert the rebound, doubling Spurs’ lead.

City’s best chances came through Omar Marmoush and Erling Haaland, but both failed to capitalize.

Haaland missed a header in first-half stoppage time and later overhit a pass to Rayan Cherki with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Tottenham, who narrowly lost to PSG on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup earlier this month, showed composure and tactical discipline throughout the match.

Late efforts from Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odobert nearly extended their lead, but Trafford made key saves to prevent further damage.

The defeat continues City’s poor record against Spurs, having won only four of their last 13 Premier League meetings.

With the transfer window closing soon, pressure mounts on manager Pep Guardiola to address squad weaknesses and reignite the club’s title challenge.
