Four people lost their lives and two others sustained injuries on Monday when a trailer transporting cement lost control and fell on a tricycle near the Second Niger Bridge in Asaba, Delta State.
The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m., according to eyewitness accounts. The victims were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where two survivors are currently receiving treatment.
Confirming the incident, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Delta State, Mr. Frederick Ogidan, attributed the crash to overspeeding.
“It happened towards the Second Niger Bridge,” Ogidan said.
“The trailer collided with the tricycle and fell on it. Three victims died on the spot, and one more died at the hospital.”
Ogidan added that the deceased included passengers in the tricycle and individuals aboard the trailer, which was reportedly owned by a cement company.
Emergency responders were able to rescue two people from the wreckage, while efforts are ongoing to clear the scene and investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The FRSC has reiterated its warning to drivers, especially those operating heavy-duty vehicles, to adhere strictly to speed limits and safety regulations to prevent further tragedies on Nigerian roads.
