Police spokesperson Moses Yamu confirmed the rescue in a statement issued Wednesday, revealing that the operations were launched in response to multiple abductions that occurred on August 23, when armed kidnappers blocked portions of the highways and seized several travellers.

Following distress calls, officers from the Iguobazuwa and Ekiadolor Divisions, backed by tactical units, local vigilantes, and hunters, initiated intensive bush-combing efforts to locate and free the victims.

Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, led the operation along the Benin-Akure corridor, utilizing drones and other technical tools to enhance precision and coordination.

“Six victims were rescued along the Benin–Akure Road, including one with a gunshot injury who is now receiving treatment. Three more victims were freed on the Benin–Lagos Road, while an additional seven regained their freedom on August 25,” the statement read.

Agbonika praised the collaborative efforts of security operatives and community volunteers, emphasizing that such partnerships are essential in combating violent crime across the state.

He assured residents that the command remains committed to rescuing any remaining victims and apprehending those responsible.

He added that both human and technological resources would continue to be deployed to safeguard Edo’s highways.
