Tensions flared in Kano State on Friday, September 5, 2025, as a violent mob stormed the Garko Police Division, leaving one person dead and several others injured, including three police officers.
According to a statement released by the Kano State Police Command on Saturday, the unrest was triggered by the arrest of three suspects linked to the alleged killing of a resident from the Wudil area.
The suspects had been transferred to the Garko Division for further interrogation when a crowd of enraged youths, armed with sticks and stones, descended on the station in protest.
The mob reportedly attempted to forcibly gain access to the suspects, disrupting police operations and causing extensive damage to property.
Among the destruction were a divisional patrol vehicle, three vehicles belonging to Hisbah and the Garko Local Government Council, and shattered windows of the police building.
During the chaos, three police officers sustained injuries and were rushed to Wudil Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Tragically, a burning tyre exploded and fatally struck one of the attackers, while three others were injured in the melee.
In response, the Commissioner of Police swiftly deployed containment measures, including stakeholder engagement efforts, which helped restore calm and order to the area.
The Command confirmed that nine individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack, and investigations are ongoing to identify additional perpetrators.
