The Commissioner of Police for the Special Intervention Squad, CP Abayomi Shogunle, has clarified the reasons behind the detention of human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore.
Addressing journalists and protesters in Abuja on Friday, Shogunle stated that Sowore was detained after allegedly refusing to make a statement during police interrogation, despite being shown two petitions in the presence of his lawyers.
According to the CP, the petitions include Forgery of a police document, which Sowore allegedly published online, and Cyberbullying, based on recent online activity.
“The law requires that when an allegation is made, the individual must respond. Sowore refused to make a statement, even in the presence of his lawyers,”
Shogunle said. “He has the right to remain silent, but the police also have legal responsibilities when a suspect chooses not to speak.”
Sowore had earlier honored an invitation from the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit at Force Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, but was subsequently detained.
His arrest has sparked nationwide protests in Lagos, Abuja, Osun, and Oyo states, with supporters demanding his release.
Responding to concerns about the legality of the detention exceeding 24 hours, Shogunle insisted that due process was being followed:
“We are professionals. Everything required by law in keeping someone in custody is being followed.”
He also offered to allow a few protesters to visit Sowore’s holding location to confirm that he was not being mistreated.
“The law is being followed regarding his apprehension and detention. He came himself, and the moment he refused to make a statement, his arrest was ordered,” Shogunle concluded.
