Emirates Airlines Bans Use of Power Banks Onboard Flights Starting October 1

Emirates Airlines has announced a ban on the use of power banks during flights, citing safety concerns linked to lithium battery-related incidents.

The new regulation will take effect on October 1, 2025, and applies to all passengers across its global network.

According to the airline, travelers will still be allowed to carry one power bank onboard, provided it is rated under 100 Watt Hours. However, the device must remain unused throughout the flight.

Passengers will not be permitted to use power banks to charge personal devices, nor will they be allowed to recharge the power banks using the aircraft’s power supply.

Emirates specified that all accepted power banks must display visible capacity rating information. The devices must be stored either in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front, and are strictly prohibited from being placed in overhead bins or checked luggage.

The decision follows a comprehensive safety review and comes amid a rise in fire-related incidents involving lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries in the aviation industry.

These batteries, commonly found in power banks, can experience thermal runaway – a dangerous reaction triggered by overcharging or physical damage, which may result in fires, explosions, or the release of toxic gases.

Through restricting the use of power banks and requiring cabin-accessible storage, Emirates aims to enhance emergency response capabilities and reduce potential hazards.

The airline emphasized that safety remains a core value and pledged to continue refining its onboard safety protocols to protect passengers and crew.
