NCAA Bans Use of Flight Mode During Takeoff and Landing, Orders Shutdown

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a new directive mandating that all electronic devices, including mobile phones, must be completely switched off, not just placed in flight mode, during takeoff and landing on all domestic flights.

The announcement was made by NCAA Director-General, Capt. Chris Najomo, during an Emergency National Civil Aviation Security Committee and Stakeholders Meeting held in Abuja. He emphasized that the directive aims to eliminate ambiguity and enhance aviation safety protocols.

“To avoid ambiguity and perceived confusion, all mobile phones, I repeat, all mobile phones and other portable electronic devices should be switched off during at least the critical phase of flight on all Nigerian airlines.”

“There is nothing like flight mode any longer. They must be switched off,” Najomo stated.

He further directed all Nigerian airline operators to update their operations manuals to reflect the new policy and submit them to the NCAA for immediate approval.

The move is part of broader efforts to strengthen aviation security and improve passenger compliance.

“It remains the responsibility of the crew to communicate this requirement to passengers, and the responsibility of the passengers to comply with crew instructions,” Najomo added.

The NCAA noted that the directive may be reviewed in the future as aircraft technology and safety assessments evolve.
