Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B has been cleared of all assault allegations in a high-profile civil trial that drew widespread media attention and viral moments from the courtroom.
The case, filed by security guard Emani Ellis, stemmed from a 2018 incident at a Beverly Hills medical office, where Ellis alleged that the rapper – then four months pregnant – slashed her face with long fingernails, spat on her, and hurled racial slurs during a heated confrontation. Ellis sought $24 million in damages, claiming emotional trauma and physical injury.
However, after a colorful four-day hearing in Los Angeles, a jury unanimously dismissed the claims, siding with Cardi B, whose legal name is Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar.
The rapper maintained throughout the proceedings that she never physically touched Ellis and that the altercation was purely verbal.
“I swear to God, I will say it on my death bed – I did not touch that woman,” Cardi B declared outside the courthouse following the verdict.
“With that being said, this time around I’m going to be nice. But the next person that tries to do a frivolous lawsuit against me, I’m going to counter-sue and I’m going to make you pay.”
During the trial, Cardi B’s legal team argued that Ellis had aggressively approached the artist, attempting to record her on a phone as she entered the doctor’s office.
The rapper, who had been trying to keep her pregnancy private, testified that she felt cornered and threatened.
Witnesses, including the obstetrician and his receptionist, corroborated Cardi B’s account, stating that Ellis was the aggressor and that no physical assault occurred. The jury deliberated for less than an hour before delivering its verdict.
The ruling marks another legal victory for Cardi B, who has faced multiple lawsuits in recent years but continues to defend her reputation vigorously.
The rapper’s courtroom presence – marked by bold fashion choices and candid exchanges – captivated audiences online, adding to the spectacle of the trial.
Ellis, meanwhile, expressed disappointment with the outcome but said she was proud to have had her day in court.
