Real Madrid extended their perfect start to the La Liga season with a 2-0 victory over Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday.
Defender Éder Militão opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a powerful long-range strike before Kylian Mbappé sealed the win early in the second half.
The French forward, wearing Madrid’s No. 10 shirt, collected a pass from Vinícius Júnior and fired past goalkeeper Marko Dmitrović from outside the box.
The result means Madrid, under new coach Xabi Alonso, have won all five of their opening league fixtures and remain five points clear of champions Barcelona, who host Getafe on Sunday.
Mbappé has now scored five goals in La Liga this season, adding to the two penalties he converted in midweek during Madrid’s Champions League win over Marseille.
Vinícius, recalled to the starting line-up, provided the assist for Mbappé and later struck the post. England international Jude Bellingham made his first appearance since undergoing shoulder surgery, coming on as a late substitute alongside Eduardo Camavinga.
Espanyol, who arrived in Madrid third in the table, were outclassed throughout and have not beaten Real at the Bernabéu since 1996.
Elsewhere, Levante defeated Girona 4-0 away. Girona, who finished third last season to qualify for the Champions League, ended the match with nine men and remain bottom of the table without a win.
