MTN Nigeria’s Dabengwa Data Centre Earns Tier III Certification

MTN Nigeria has announced that its Dabengwa Data Centre in Lagos has secured the prestigious Tier III Certification for Constructed Facility (TCCF) from the Uptime Institute, marking a significant milestone in the company’s push to strengthen digital infrastructure in Africa’s largest economy.

The $150 million facility, which opened in July, is one of Nigeria’s largest prefabricated modular data centres.

Built with 96 prefabricated containers in its first phase, the centre integrates AI-powered energy optimisation and hybrid cloud capabilities designed to enhance reliability and flexibility for enterprise clients.

MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, described the certification as a reflection of the company’s long-term commitment to global best practices.

“This certification is a testament to the hard work, strategic focus, and collaboration across our teams and partners,” Toriola said in a statement.

“It reflects our commitment to building top-tier infrastructure that supports Nigeria’s digital future, and we will uphold the same high standards of quality, resilience, and compliance to deliver even greater value to our stakeholders.”

The Tier III Certification is a globally recognised benchmark for data centre reliability. It guarantees multiple independent paths for power and cooling, allowing routine maintenance without service disruption.

Facilities at this level are expected to deliver 99.982 per cent availability, which translates to a maximum of just 1.6 hours of downtime annually.

This achievement follows MTN’s earlier attainment of the Tier III Certification for Design Documentation (TCDD), making Dabengwa one of only four facilities in Nigeria to hold both certifications.

Industry analysts note that this dual recognition positions MTN Nigeria as a leader in enterprise-grade infrastructure, enhancing its competitiveness in the digital services market.

As the first of MTN Nigeria’s technical facilities to receive the certification, the Dabengwa Data Centre represents a cornerstone of the company’s Ambition 2025 Strategy, which prioritises resilient digital infrastructure as the backbone of Nigeria’s growing digital economy.

The development also underscores MTN’s broader efforts to empower businesses, enable innovation, and drive inclusive digital transformation across the country.

With over 84 million subscribers nationwide, MTN Nigeria said it remains focused on expanding its digital capabilities, investing in future-ready infrastructure, and delivering solutions that meet the evolving needs of customers and enterprise partners.
