The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed three new cases of Lassa fever in its latest Situation Report for Week 34, covering August 18 to 24, 2025.
The cases were recorded in Edo and Ondo states, marking a slight decline from the five cases reported in the previous week.
According to the report, the cumulative number of confirmed cases for the year has now reached 857, with 160 deaths recorded. This brings the case fatality rate (CFR) to 18.7 percent – an increase from the 17.1 percent recorded during the same period in 2024.
The NCDC noted that 21 states across 106 local government areas have reported at least one confirmed case of the disease. However, five states – Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi – account for 90 percent of all confirmed infections.
The report also highlighted that the most affected demographic remains individuals aged 21 to 30 years. Encouragingly, no new infections among healthcare workers were recorded during the reporting period.
Despite the rise in fatalities, the NCDC observed a downward trend in both suspected and confirmed cases when compared to the same timeframe last year.
The agency continues to monitor the situation closely and coordinate response efforts nationwide.
