The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has announced a nationwide peaceful protest to demand improved road safety following a series of fatal accidents involving articulated vehicles.
The protest is scheduled to take place from Monday, August 18 to Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
In a statement issued in Kaduna and signed by the association’s Action Committee Public Relations Officer, Usman Ibrahimnyass Dende, NAPS said the demonstration aims to draw attention to the increasing number of road accidents affecting students and other road users.
The recent incidents in Auchi, Edo State, were cited as the trigger for the protest. On August 12, Ruth Otabor, a recent graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, reportedly lost her leg after being hit by a heavy-duty vehicle.
Another accident on August 17 allegedly claimed three lives and left several others injured, including students.
NAPS described the accidents as preventable and called for stronger regulation of articulated vehicles, especially in densely populated areas.
The association outlined several demands, including the suspension and retraining of drivers who violate safety standards, medical and rehabilitation support for victims, financial assistance for affected families, and the construction of pedestrian bridges and speed bumps in student communities.
They also called for collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to enforce safety laws, regular safety audits, and strict penalties for negligent drivers.
According to the statement, the protest was organized after efforts to engage stakeholders failed to produce concrete results.
NAPS urged civil society groups, religious leaders, and the general public to support their call for safer roads and better welfare for accident victims.
