Tottenham Hotspur has appointed Cristian Romero as the club’s new captain, following the departure of Son Heung-min to LAFC earlier this month.
Son had worn the armband for the past two seasons and famously lifted the Europa League trophy in May, ending Spurs’ 17-year wait for silverware.
Romero, who previously served as vice-captain, led the team during the Europa League final victory over Manchester United, starting as skipper before Son came off the bench in the second half.
The 27-year-old Argentine defender will officially begin his captaincy when Tottenham faces UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.
New manager Thomas Frank confirmed the decision in an interview with the club’s official website:
“I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he’s going to be our captain. He was very honoured and very happy about it. It’s a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season.”
Frank praised Romero’s leadership qualities, both on and off the pitch, noting his relentless drive and influence on the squad.
Romero joined Spurs from Atalanta four years ago and was part of Argentina’s World Cup-winning team in 2022. His appointment marks a new chapter for Tottenham as they prepare for a high-stakes season under fresh leadership.
