Taylor Swift may be one of the most lyrically clever artists of her generation, but even her mom isn’t always in on the joke.
During a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up, Swift shared a lighthearted moment about her new song “Wood” from her latest album The Life of a Showgirl.
According to the pop superstar, her mother, Andrea Swift, has a very different interpretation of the track, and it’s not quite what Taylor had in mind.
“I think that she thinks that that song is about superstitions, popular superstitions,” Swift said with a laugh.
“Which, which it absolutely is.”
Host Nicole Ryan couldn’t help but giggle at the sweet misunderstanding. “Aw, Andrea, we love you,” she said.
But fans know the truth: “Wood” is widely believed to be about Swift’s fiancé, NFL star Travis Kelce. The lyrics include cheeky references to a “Redwood tree” and “new heights of manhood,” which many interpret as playful nods to Kelce’s athleticism, and perhaps more.
Adding to the fun, “New Heights” is also the name of Kelce’s podcast with his brother, retired football player Jason Kelce.
Swift famously announced her album on that very show, making the connection even more obvious to fans.
Still, Swift isn’t bothered by her mom’s take. In fact, she finds it kind of perfect.
“That’s the joy of the double entendre,” she explained.
“You could read that song to people and it just goes right over their head. You see in that song what you want to see.”
