U.S. Embassy Mandates 5-Year Social Media Disclosure for Nigerian Visa Applicants

The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a renewed advisory to all visa applicants, stating the mandatory requirement to disclose their social media history from the past five years when completing the DS-160 visa application form.

In a statement shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Mission reminded applicants that they must provide all usernames or handles used across any social media platforms within the specified period. Failure to do so, it warned, could jeopardize future travel plans to the United States.

“Visa applicants are required to list all social media usernames or handles of every platform they have used from the last 5 years on the DS-160 visa application form,” the Mission stated.

Applicants are also expected to certify the accuracy of the information provided before signing and submitting the form.

The Mission cautioned that incomplete or misleading entries will not be overlooked and may result in visa denial or future ineligibility.

“Applicants certify that the information in their visa application is true and correct before they sign and submit. Omitting social media information could lead to visa denial and ineligibility for future visas,” the advisory added.

This requirement is part of broader U.S. visa vetting procedures aimed at enhancing national security and ensuring transparency in the application process.
