Why I Walked Away from Secular Music – Enji Praise Baba Opens Up

Enji Praise Baba (formerly Pbaba tha AfroViber), a singer from Adogi in Lafia East, Nasarawa State, has opened up about a major turning point in his life; leaving secular music behind to follow Jesus and sing gospel.

In this honest and emotional account, he shares what led to the decision, how his life changed, and what message he now hopes to pass on through his music.

“I didn’t leave secular music because of some big spiritual encounter,” Enji says.

“It was more of a personal conviction. I’ve always had the fear of God in me, even when I was doing secular music. My conscience kept telling me I wasn’t doing the right thing.”

Raised in a Christian home, Enji was taught to follow God from a young age. But when he got to university, things changed. He met new friends, got caught up in the lifestyle, and slowly drifted away from what he was raised to believe.

“I was spiritually unconscious,” he admits. “I loved the things of the world. I knew people were praying for me, and I even got prophecies from men of God. But I didn’t care. Deep down, I knew I was wrong.”

The real turning point came when he started feeling uncomfortable with the kind of songs he was making, the cover art, and the way he was living.

“I started asking myself, ‘How can I leave this now after seven years in the industry? What will my fans think? What about the ladies who love my music?’”

Then one day, his conscience spoke clearly:

“You should only think about pleasing God, not man. When you die, it’s between you and your God.”

According to him, that hit hard. On June 4, 2024, Enji made up his mind. He posted online:

“I JUST WANT TO SERVE GOD WHOLEHEARTEDLY.” A few days later, on June 7, he confirmed it again: “Henceforth, I want to use my voice to PRAISE God.”

He says Isaiah 43:7 helped him understand his purpose: “God created us for His glory. We’re here to serve Him, not ourselves.”

Life After the Switch

Enji says his life changed for the better after switching to gospel music. “I was sincere with myself. I wasn’t doing it for show. I started seeing results. My thoughts changed. I had peace inside me.” But not everyone was happy about it.

“Some of my friends in the secular industry stopped talking to me. Some messaged me asking why I changed. I told them Ecclesiastes 12:1 – ‘Remember your Creator in the days of your youth.’”

He says it’s not easy, but it’s worth it. “I lost some connections, but I gained peace. And that’s more important.”

Enji says he couldn’t talk about the life of God (ZOE) before because he was living the opposite. “Now I’m free. I’m saved in Christ Jesus. His love never fails. Just believe and stay committed to Him – you’ll be saved.”

His new song, “Call on Jesus” featuring Jbradas, is based on Matthew 7:7 and John 3:16. It’s a message of hope, love, and salvation.

Advice to Artists Struggling With the Same Decision

Advice

To other artists who feel torn between fame and faith, Enji has this to say:

“Seek God first. The Bible says, ‘Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all other things will be added to you.’ Focus on Jesus and you’ll have peace. The devil doesn’t give anything for free. God is a jealous God – you can’t serve Him and the devil at the same time.”

Even after losing his father, Enji says he never regretted choosing God. “Stay close to the Word of God. You won’t be deceived. You’ll be saved.”
