Afropop singer Seyi Shay is giving flowers where they’re due, and they’re going straight to Wizkid.
In a heartfelt conversation on The Honest Bunch Podcast, the “Irawo” hitmaker opened up about her early collaborations with the Afrobeats superstar and the deep creative and personal bond they shared.
“I did Crazy with Wizkid. I featured him on the song and he featured me on one of his songs. I also did backing vocals for a couple of his other songs then. We became genuine friends,” she recalled, her voice laced with nostalgia.
But their connection went far beyond studio sessions. Seyi Shay described Wizkid as a rare kind of genius, someone whose talent seemed almost supernatural.
“I’ve seen him record while eating, and that was mad to me,” she said.
“He’s like a magician. My spirit, my soul, everything resonates with people that are inhumanly talented.”
While fans saw the hits, Seyi Shay saw the hustle. She revealed that Wizkid often pulled her aside to share hard-earned wisdom about the music business – the kind of advice that doesn’t come with a beat.
“He used to advise me a lot and used to tell me how people behave in this industry,” she said, hinting at the complex dynamics behind the glitz and glamour.
For Seyi Shay, those moments of mentorship were just as impactful as their musical collaborations. They helped shape her understanding of the industry and gave her the tools to navigate its highs and lows.
